Letitia “Tish” James is the 67th Attorney General for the State of New York. She is the first woman of color to hold statewide office in New York and the first woman to be elected Attorney General.
Prior to being elected Attorney General, she served as the Public Advocate for the City of New York, the second highest elected official in New York City, where she became the first woman of color to hold citywide office in New York City. She served as a New York City Council, head of the Brooklyn Regional Office of the New York Attorney General’s Office, and spent many years as a lawyer in the New York State Legislature.
She began her career as a public defender at the Legal Aid Society. From groundbreaking laws to ban questions about salary history and strengthen tenants’ rights, to efforts to protect vulnerable communities and tackle corruption, Tish is an experienced attorney and public servant with a long record of accomplishments.
